Even though less than 25 % of dentists are using this procedure it is rapidly growing into the preferred method for tooth filling. And when you see the see the results you'll know why. There is no comparison between the appearance of a composite filling and an amalgam filling.
The drawback with composite fillings in the past was their lack of strength and durability. But recent improvements in the technology of composite formulation has made it strong enough to be used even on your back molars, the workhorses of your mouth. Composites are even stronger than amalgams in shear strength which makes them better for overlaying large biting areas and they will last five to seven years on average.
One really great advantage of composite or white fillings is that, unlike amalgam, they can be repaired. Because composite can bond to itself new material can be added to the old filling, so it is less expensive to the patient.
